Abstract :
Magnetic pulse compression modulators are sometimes used to replace conventionally switched modulators when extreme switch performance and/or extended switch life and reliability are required. For example, high voltage, but relatively low current load pulses can be switched directly with a thyratron or other cathode-gas tube, but with a lifetime that is not as extensive as desired. This paper discusses the design issues to be considered when seeking to replace conventional, but simple high voltage switched modulators with more complex magnetic pulse compression modulators.
