Abstract :
The performance of the maximum likelihood (ML) timing synchronizer is investigated. It is proved that when the autocorrelation function of the pulse shape is quadratic, then the performance of the ML timing estimate will approach the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRB). The autocorrelation function of many pulse shapes are approximately quadratic near their central peak, thus explaining the proximity of ML performance to the CRB
