Abstract
An automobile navigation aid that uses synthetic speech to give instruction to the driver of a car in real time is described. The advantage of speech is that it leaves the driver´s eyes free for driving; however, it also poses special problems. The strategies employed by the Back Seat Driver to use speech successfully are described. The linguistic abilities are discussed, and the problems encountered because of the exclusive use of speech are described. The way in which these problems were overcome is described.<>
