  • Abstract
Phonocardiography can be defined as the method for obtaining recording of cardiovascular sound. Laennec (1781-1826) was the first to listen to the sounds of the heart. He invented the stethoscope and provided the basis of contemporary ascultation. As physiological knowledge increased through the following decades, faulty interpretations of heart sounds were progressively eliminated. The first transduction of heart sounds was made by Hurthle (1895), who used a microphone. Eindhoven, in 1907, was the first to record phonocardiograms with the aid of a carbon microphone and a string galvanometer. The evolution of phonocardiography is strongly coupled with ascultatory findings and thus the development was predominantly driven by clinicians, and not by physiologists, physists or engineers. The result of this situation is that a variety of apparatus have been designed, mostly according to the needs of a clinic or the scientific interests of a medical researcher
