Abstract :
Tissue engineering is a rapidly growing field with the aim of developing replacement tissues and organs for patients. An important aspect to the success of regenerated tissue is in the seeding of cells into structured porous scaffolds. This paper reports on an integrated system that is capable of printing bio-scaffold structures and automating the process of cell seeding. The two key components of the system include an in-house customized bio-scaffold printer and a spheroid seeding device. The former generates the physical bio-scaffold for cell seeding; and the latter separates and places individual cells within the porous lattice of the scaffold. Preliminary tests have shown proof of concept for the design of the system.
