Abstract :
The present study was aimed at measuring the electrical properties of a goat eye lens. The complex impedance, total impedance and DC resistance were determined as a function of extremely low frequency (10 mHz to 10 Hz) at 263-306 K. A computer controlled complex impedance system (EG & G, PARC USA model 278) was used to draw the Cole-Cole plot at various experimental temperatures. Results of plots showed a perfect arc of semicircle with their centre lying below the abscissa at an angle α, called the distribution factor. The value of α was found to be temperature dependent and to increase with increasing temperature. The value of α at 263 K is 10 whereas at 306 K it has increased to 21. Using a graphical analysis of the Cole-Cole plot, the characteristic frequency was estimated as 20 mHz at 243 K; it increases with increasing temperature and it becomes 120.1 mHz at 306 K. These electrical parameters suggest multiple current paths through intracellular and extracellular fluid compartments. The data are also helpful in understanding the electrical energy transport mechanism in the eye lens
