Abstract
The authors propose a compound Poisson process model for representing the error characteristics in a digital transmission system. Only two parameters are needed to analyze the error performance of a digital transmission system. Three types of probability distributions to represent the distribution of cluster mass are illustrated. An analysis of the three-state error model, which is derived from the original Gilbert error model, is presented using the compound Poisson process approach
