Abstract :
Fiber-optic communications in Hong Kong are reviewed. The aspects examined are the junction networks; optical systems; the local network; wideband services; and future trends in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), synchronous optical network (SONET), metropolitan area networks (MAN), fiber to the home, and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). In 1981, fiber-optic transmission was introduced. Now, over 95% of all interexchange connections are digital, and 75% use optical fiber. The digital transmission hierarchy used observes North American standards
