Abstract
In developing its North American Navigable Database, the author´s Corporation faced a series of logical and physical database design issues relating to its use for automotive navigation. The author explores several important database design and implementation issues and presents recommendations and solutions drawn from experience. He discusses a three-phase approach to developing database technology to achieve extreme database accuracy and completeness without sacrificing high efficiency in database production. It is noted that, by giving significant attention to database content, organization, relationships, and access, NavTech was able to construct a coherent and efficient environment in which to perform navigable cartography, and provide for a variety of other geographic applications.<>
