Abstract :
Summary form only given. An undergraduate laboratory experiment was designed by a senior electrical engineering student. First, students learn about the physics of fibers and investigate different properties of multi-mode and single mode fibers. The second goal is to apply this knowledge to a functional fiber sensor in the laboratory. The experiment is part of the laboratory component of an optoelectronics elective course, EE341 “Optoelectronic Materials and Devices”, offered in the Electrical Engineering Department at Bucknell University. This undergraduate experiment focuses on optical fibre sensors and demonstrates the interdisciplinary appeal of optoelectronics which integrates knowledge from fields including physics, electrical engineering, materials science, and chemistry. This approach represents an effort to convey the significance of optical fiber in real world applications to undergraduate students. The lab effectively complements an existing laboratory experiment where students create a communication link. Investigation of various types of optical fibers and their properties led to the development of an experimental procedure in which students study properties of multi-mode fiber and a single mode interferometric fiber sensor. In addition to acquiring knowledge about fiber and fiber sensors, the senior design student also gained experience in designing a laboratory experiment and effectively communicating with lab students
