Abstract :
In the present day scenario private power producers are increasing rapidly to meet the increase in demand due to heavily loaded customers. In this process, the existing transmission lines are overloaded and lead to unstable system. In this paper a three-step procedure is developed and is illustrated to decide the number, location and optimal setting of thyristor control series capacitors (TCSCs) to alleviate/eliminate the overloads on the transmission lines under network contingencies. In the first step an optimization problem is formulated and is solved by integer linear programming (ILP) method to select an appropriate number of TCSCs used. In the second step these appropriate number of TCSCs are ranked using an index called single contingency sensitivity index. Once the optimal location is identified, the optimal setting of the TCSC is obtained through the programming code written in MATLAB. This premise is attested on 6-bus and IEEE-30-bus test systems to show the effectiveness of the method.
