Abstract :
Designing a network with traffic uncertainty considerations has become crucial due to a new network architecture such as the IP-over-optical network, where the IP-based traffic can be routed directly over the optical layer. Together with the explosive growth of the Internet, the variation in traffic volume, which is termed demand uncertainty in this paper, will be one of the most important constraints in a network design problem. This paper investigates a practical implementation of a network design model considering traffic demand uncertainty. We focus on the routing problem based on stochastic programming approach, especially the chance-constrained programming based scheme. A design of a two-layer network model is discussed with the levels of guarantee and network granularity factors.
