Abstract :
The authors review current research dealing with potential applications of advanced vehicle monitoring and control systems. The University effort focuses on trucking operations, satellite telecommunications systems, and man-machine interfaces. The proposed system will provide position determination, two-way data communication and, eventually, voice communication capabilities. In addition to technical areas such as radio reception and protocol modifications, cost savings and other benefits are being studied. In investigating the human interface problem, research seeks to compensate for the possibly marginal communication skills of the driver, as well as the special nature of the satellite communication links.<>
