Abstract :
Comments and cited referenced papers by Dr. Dlugosz described specific field-excitation geometries in connection with biomedical studies of energy absorption by “an animal under test” and, broadly interpreted, include ourselves. The importance of this subject is underscored by the exposure of all of us to electromagnetic radiation from a variety of sources: not only those from radio and television sources, but today from cell-phone towers, satellites, and even from traffic-light signal systems. In Dlugosz [1], a distinction was made between near- and far-field components from emitting sources. To be sure, both types are of concern in biological measurements in the geometries described by Dr. Dlugosz, and also by antenna or radar engineers like myself in connection with polarization properties. But except for the detailed design of radiating apertures, we can take advantage of the simplicities afforded by a far-field assumption.
