Abstract :
The author outlines a scheme for extending the X.25 data networks into the mobile or radio environment on a continent-wide basis. The issues of connectivity are dealt with in an illustrative fashion, and a composite scheme is proposed whereby the lengthy rollout periods associated with a purely land-based system can be reduced. Meteor scatter is introduced as a practical communications link. It is concluded that meaningful communications links for the long-haul transport industry are now available with this packet access radio technology.<>
