Abstract :
The university-based scientific research laboratory provides interesting and unique challenges to the individual responsible for its technical supervision. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss key characteristics of the “scientific personality” and how these relate to the laboratory communication environment that the technical supervisor should nurture and maintain. When successful, the unique needs of the researcher will be met by the provision of an atmosphere which will facilitate creativity. The creative work of research personnel is the primary product of the laboratory. The degree of productivity is partially dependent upon the effectiveness of the technical supervisor in optimizing the laboratory communication environment
