Abstract
Early involvement with product design teams forces technical communicators to reflect on their roles in the design of usable products and requires a new perspective about peripheral user documentation. The paper addresses the link between software design and documentation and considers these questions: what new roles are available to technical communicators? How can technical communicators be more effective on design teams? How are product design and documentation affected by human factors?
