Abstract :
The purpose of this paper is to compare two possible methods of evaluating power quality difficulties in petroleum terminals. The paper focuses on voltage and current harmonics caused by the application of PWM inverters, but also addresses voltage dips and transients. Many users have questions about the application of adjustable speed drives (ASD) and their impact on power quality relative to the IEEE 519-1992 standard. This paper examines those questions and provides relevant analysis. The authors have selected a petroleum terminal application as a basis for evaluating power quality issues relative to ASD. Future papers may examine other petrochemical industry applications
