Upgradability study of broadband distribution systems for B-ISDN

Abstract :
The author previously investigated fundamental upgrading strategies for fiber optic broadband distribution systems (see Globecom ´86, p.386, 1986). The efficiencies of the strategies in cost reduction as well as flexibilities in upgrading were shown. The strategies are extended to consider both residential and business subscribers in a B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital network) environment with a very large range of distribution capacity requirements (e.g. from 50 Mb/s to 9.6 Gb/s). Overviews of upgrading strategies reported earlier are given and efficiencies of the strategies are reviewed. Extending the strategies for residential subscribers is then considered. Extending the strategies for business subscribers is also discussed
