Abstract :
A general procedural problem selection approach is described for use in almost any environment to help select problems appropriate for the application of expert system technology. The five criteria used in the approach are outlined as follows: (1) the problem or task should be the appropriate size and type; (2) genuine experts must exist who are willing to share their skills to solve the problem; (3) the problem should be realistic and solvable; (4) the expert system should be justifiable for any one of the following reasons: there is a high payoff for solving the problem correctly, human expertise is scarce or being lost, or the expertise needed is in a hostile or remote location; (5) the expert system should use appropriate computer techniques. The application of this process to the facility construction, operations, and maintenance functions of air force civil engineering is summarized
