Abstract
In order to analyze the processes of production and circulation of ideas in the Modern age, it is particularly interesting to study the context of higher education in a peripheral region, in this case Sardinia. This field of study is especially appropriate for the purposes of bringing into focus the slow processes of the settlement of ideas and for understanding the political and cultural strategies adopted by central governments towards peripheral territories. In order to carry out this research, it was necessary to recover the almost entirely unpublished historical evidence on the activity of the Island´s secular and religious institutions for higher education. The work was carried out through extensive research in Cagliari´s archives and libraries, and is particularly focused on the scrutiny of the manuscript treatises used as textbooks at the University of Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy) between the XVII and XVIII Centuries.
