Abstract
In this paper, the application of inerter in heavy truck suspensions is investigated, where the parallel arrangement of a spring, a damper and an inerter is employed as the heavy truck suspension strut. The performance of the considered suspension strut when applied to both a quarter heavy truck model and a 7-degree-of-freedom (DOF) half heavy truck model is investigated separately and the comparison with the conventional leaf-spring suspension is provided. It is shown that for the typical heavy trucks considered in this paper, both ride comfort and dynamic tyre load can significantly be improved by using inerter.
