Abstract
This paper describes some of the existing telecommunication systems protection and the damage it has caused, the weakness and problems of revised protection and manufacturer attempts to circumvent the standards. The paper presents a new approach that has overcome all of the shortcomings above. This new approach has been tested for over two years on telecommunication sites in South America with some of the worst utility power quality in the world. Installations are now taking place in Asia, Europe, North and South America by telecommunication operators, industry and government on "mission critical sites". Details of sites, the major advantages of this technique and the technical development that led to this approach are presented. The technique has resulted in vastly increased site reliability everywhere it has been deployed, in one case to be covered increasing the site reliability from 10 days to 2 years and counting.
