Abstract
Discusses four types of activities that faculty can undertake which would enhance their ability to meet teaching responsibilities and be recognized as professional development. These activities are: (1) to provide learning opportunities not otherwise available either to the individual student or to the curriculum in general; (2) to improve the communication of subject matter so that learning is enhanced. (e.g., through the effective use of teaching technologies); (3) to create mechanisms for improving the teaching of other faculty; and (4) to encourage the practice of good teaching as exemplified by such characteristics as teacher enthusiasm, fairness, and availability; improved student performance; maintaining currency of subject matter in terms of knowledge content, research trends, and changes in the techniques of practice; and relating technology to its social implications by addressing concerns of the profession to technological applications
