Abstract
The authors present a solution to bridge the gap between the narrowband integrated services digital network (NISDN) and broadband ISDN (BISDN). The authors focus on the DS1 rate, but extension to other rates is possible. The solution proposed is to address, in particular, private corporate networks which will provide multimedia services and will have a mixture of very low speed interactive data traffic and high-speed images/video traffic. The mode ranges from very bursty to continuous streams. The key element is the provision of the integrated synchronous and asynchronous transport scheme residing on existing transmission facilities and supporting existing interfaces. The approach is practical and easily implemented
