Abstract
The author outlines the historical development of data services in Hong Kong Telephone since 1978, and also outlines the current and future development potential for data transport and facsimile services. The focus is on new service developments driven by customer demand rather than technological innovation. The evolution of the packet switching service named Datapak is described. The regulatory arrangements reached in 1978 caused Hong Kong Telephone to introduce independent registration of fax lines, leading in 1981 to the transfer of all fax lines to electronic switching systems. This discrimination of facsimile service assured users of a high-quality transmission within the Hong Kong public switched telephone network. Growth trends for data and fax services are analyzed
