Abstract
Balancing currents within parallel winding branches of large electric machines, caused by asymmetric winding or flux distributions, are determined for steady-state conditions by the use of the method of symmetrical components. Knowledge of these balancing currents is for example valuable with respect to the evaluation of the damping of the unbalanced electromagnetic pull, design optimization of machines with asymmetric winding distributions or machine parameters and assessment of machine operation after preliminary winding repairs, which often also result in asymmetric winding distributions. The paper provides the outline of a calculation scheme to determine these currents and exemplifies this for several use cases.
