Abstract
The prototype of a new, `Universal´ PC-based controller software system is described. The background, philosophy and architecture of the Naples Coombe controller is presented. It is shown that the ease of use and structure of the system enables simple adaptation to a wide variety of applications, including retrofitted upgrades of existing plant. A recent industrial application illustrates the robustness of the design. Future developments including the incorporation of artificial intelligence are discussed
