Abstract
Key technology for physical layer (PHY) of worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) which conforms to IEEE802.16e standard contains generalized multi-carrier (GMC), adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), etc. This paper firstly introduces orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in the application of WMAN in the broadband wireless access (BWA) protocol IEEE 802.16e, then we propose another orthogonal multicarrier modulation-filtered multitone modulation (FMT), which can be realized by orthogonal filterbanks. In addition, the paper compares OFDM which use IFFT/FFT to implement and filtered multi-tone (FMT) that utilize orthogonal filterbanks to realize. Characteristics of those two GMC techniques are discussed respectively, and general expression of GMC is derived. Performance comparison between FMT and OFDM with AMC are analyzed in detail. Simulation results of GMC using AMC are presented. In the end, the paper proposes that FMT can also become valid alternative scheme to OFDM for BWA application in the WMAN PHY specification.
