Abstract
A buck type converter is described which feeds a fluorescent lamp from a DC source, being suited for low-cost applications. An analytical expression for the lamp power is derived as a function of the switching frequency and the duty ratio of the switch. Because it is not normally possible to ignite the lamp directly from the mains, a voltage doubler is added which rectifies and doubles the mains voltage. A method is given for the purpose of designing the required component values. Experimental results verify the analysis.
