Abstract :
An algorithm for analyzing a synchronous machine under faulted conditions is presented. The results obtained using the algorithm are contrasted with results obtained using symmetrical component analysis. The results show that the solutions obtained using two different approaches may differ considerably depending on both the type of fault and the prefault loading of the machine. If the results obtained using the sixth-order state model are taken to be accurate, then the symmetrical component approach is in error `on the high side´ in every case, which is, of course, desirable. Discrepancies do, however, mandate further consideration
