  • Abstract
We present the basic principles of WDM and then introduce some characteristics of various WDM approaches to the metro/access telecommunication networks. A goal of any WDM system is to multiply an optical fiber´s transmission capacity by sending signals simultaneously at multiple wavelengths. Substantial attention is dedicated to presenting a new possibility of utilizing WDM technologies in building metro/access networks. The DWDM (dense WDM) system outstandingly satisfies the requirements of long-haul networks and the CWDM (coarse WDM) system promises all the key characteristics of metro/access network architectures. Therefore, the combination of DWDM/CWDM technologies can offer a great potential for solving challenges of the metro/access network with the prospects of future development.
