  • Abstract
The development plans of a country should be equitably meet developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations. Eradicating of poverty should be considered as an indispensable requirement for sustainable development in order to decrease the disparities in standard of living and better meet the needs of the majority of the people of a country. Hence, Sri Lanka is aimed to electrify 10% of the countrypsilas house holds by off-grid methods by 2015, considering the high capital investment, operational costs and the difficulties associated with extending grid connected electricity lines to remote areas. The project of community based micro wind plant was carried out with above inspiration. A design, implementation, maintenance and one year of operational experience of a stand alone 2.5 kW community based wind power project at Gurugodaoya in Sri Lanka are discussed. This project demonstrates benefits and possibility of producing an adequate amount of power required to a rural area even at lower wind speed with most cost effective way.
