Abstract
We have employed a novel approach to reduce pump-wavelength coupling sensitivity in optically powered vertical cavity surface emitters. In pursuit of "power-by-light" devices with reduced coupling sensitivity, we have investigated the modification of the typical reflectance-spectrum interference fringes by thin-film optimization applied to semiconductor multilayers. We report the simulation, growth, and characterization of non-periodic vertical cavity surface emitters. We have created a low ripple, wideband optical-pumping region of low reflectance for the purpose of eliminating the requirement of an expensive tunable pump laser and to facilitate the use of spectrally-broad pump sources.
