Abstract
In this paper observers based on sliding modes are designed for the use with nontraditional control algorithms for an automotive alternator with a rectifier. The innovative control algorithms of the rectifier require measurements of the alternator´s EMF (electromotive force), which is not accessible directly. The observers developed in the reported research allow estimation of the EMF by using available information about currents. Several versions of the observer are considered with different models of EMF and different measured outputs. The most advanced version user only measurements of the link current
