Abstract
Industrial and Building Automation Environments feature great heterogeneity, implementing a large number of cooperating devices and applications originating from different vendors. Pioneer designs founded on open technologies, emerging in Industrial, Information and Computer Technology can provide key solutions to the above. Conceptually, the Semantic Web technologies´ cluster constitutes an ultimate tool in designer hands, enabling the development of interoperable and flexible middleware applications, resolving above issues in the automation field. Web Services, empowered with Ontologies and other related technologies, are gaining dominant position in the above domain, promising seamless integration in the automation field.
