Abstract
An approach of nonlinear ultrasonic Lamb waves is proposed to experimentally assess the fatigue damage of solid plates. The feasibility of using the nonlinear effect of Lamb wave propagation for assessing the fatigue damage of solid plates has been analyzed. After the aluminum sheets are subjected to tension-tension cyclic loading of the given cyclic number, near the driving frequency where Lamb wave propagation has a strong nonlinearity, the amplitude-frequency curves of the second harmonics of Lamb wave propagation are measured. The experimental results show that the effect of second-harmonic generation by Lamb wave propagation is rather sensitive to the state of early fatigue damage of solid plates
