  • Abstract
Effective, economical and environmentally acceptable lubrication of cement mill Type 2 open gear drives has become a complex issue. Selecting the correct lubricant is no longer a matter of “meeting the manufacturer´s specifications”. Environmental, safety, and health regulations will continue to influence what products may be used, how they may be stored and applied, and how they may be disposed after use. The intent of this paper is to inform readers of the current status of Type 2 open gear lubrication. It is also a summary general guide for determining the options available in selecting an acceptable method of lubrication and lubricant for most Type 2 drives. Hopefully, it will also positively influence readers to adopt or improve upon existing monitoring and maintenance practices to assist in their achievement of optimum drive service life
