Abstract
Although the possibility to realize compact microstrip antennas employing the concept of periodically loaded lines has been demonstrated, their ultimate performance limits are not sufficiently known, yet. Therefore, in this work the performance limitations as a consequence of size reduction are analyzed. Focal parameter is the unloaded Q-factor or the available bandwidth, respectively. Additionally, aspects of pattern, input impedance and scalability are addressed.
