Abstract
We convey through representative examples, the usefulness of Petri-nets (PNs) to model a wide variety of systems and find out their use in revealing important information about the modeled system´s behavior under various conditions. Starting with the general procedure adopted when modeling systems using PNs, we proceed to explain the PN structure and execution rules for PNs with an introductory example and a classical problem. This is followed by modeling of communication protocols, an important aspect in information processing
