Abstract :
Describes the application of a domain-independent planner, COLLAGE, (Co-Ordinated Localized aLgorithms for Action Generation and Execution), to the task of planning data-retrieval and data-preparation steps performed by Earth scientists. They describe the nature of this process, its inherent difficulties, the potential benefits of automation, and why AI-based planning is particularly suitable for carrying out this automation. The COLLAGE architecture and the progress made on the development of a prototype implementation are outlined. Two features of COLLAGE that make it particularly useful are its use of localized searching and a diverse and extendable set of plan construction techniques
