Abstract
The article is written from the standpoint of an industrial consumer of tools, methods, and theories as they concern the building of software-intensive IT (information technology) systems. A personal view is given of the contribution that advances in software engineering and related disciplines have made or might make to the job of improving the way in which systems might be constructed in a predictable, cost-effective manner that meets the customer´s requirements
