Abstract :
The authors present an expert system whose knowledge base consists of rules of the various manuals and guidelines of the different authorities, and information from experienced engineers acquired by means of a questionnaire survey. The system is an interactive system, in which the opinion of the user can be taken into account, if so desired. Application to continuous plate girders is considered. The system, by applying fuzzy sets theory, not only determines the most economic number of cross-sections and their respective transition points, but also gives an evaluation of the bending moment diagram, without having to perform conventional structural analysis
