Abstract
The authors outline a method for performing abductive reasoning using qualitative causal relationships and fuzzy set calculus for representing the levels of their preciseness. The objective of the abductive reasoner is to hypothesize smaller and relevant situation models from a much larger domain model. The criteria for preferring one model over the others are also specified in terms of the levels of preciseness of the candidate hypotheses
