Abstract
A physical model (electronic circuit) of the respiratory central pattern generator (RCPG) has been built which is used to control a ventilator. This model (simulated respiratory pattern generator, called SRPG) is based on a mathematical model developed by Botros & Bruce (1990). Input to the SRPG is in the form of a chemical drive from the subject and the output is a pattern similar to the spontaneous breathing pattern. This SRPG is then used to control a ventilator so as to deliver gas to a subject in a manner close to the natural breathing pattern
