Abstract
A method for the multilevel synthesis of combinational functions involves the use of a goal function that is similar to the function being synthesized but can be implemented by a single logic gate. Then a cascade of mapping stages is derived to transform the function being synthesized into the goal function. The resulting circuits are comparable in size with those obtained by prime implicant minimization, but goal-oriented synthesis is faster and offers more flexibility in the choice of gates
