Abstract
The paper analyses some approaches to enhancing user interaction with high functionality systems such as geographical information systems. Graphical approaches derived from the direct manipulation tradition are compared and contrasted with intelligent systems approaches. An implementation of one particular approach, based upon AI planning, is presented, and alternative user interfaces to that system are analysed. The benefits of a quite novel form of goal based or declarative interaction are described
