Abstract :
Paper making and processing applications require several drives that need to deliver high performance, in particular considering the high speed operation of the newer machines. Electronic synchronization is now used instead of mechanical transmissions to assure the quality of the produced paper rolls. The resulting increased complexity of the controls is offset by the simplification of the mechanics. A five-drive paper system is studied using energetic macroscopic representation. A control scheme is deduced from this graphical model. The modeling and control development methods lead to a structured control scheme composed of many simple and easily tuned controllers, which ensure a natural decoupling of each drive despite their non-linear coupling induced by the elastic band sections
