Abstract
Electrical signals from 90 day old Sprague-Dawley rats were recorded from two regions of the hippocampal formation during four vigilance states. Using these signals the correlation dimension was calculated using the Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm to assess whether this approach is effective in differentiating between the vigilance states. Plots of correlation dimension vs. increased embedding dimension showed that REM and non-REM vigilance states have distinct and different characteristics; and with higher embedding dimension it is possible to differentiate between REM and non-REM vigilance states
