Abstract
We develop proactive congestion controls in a virtual path of a broadband ATM network that supports real time services. Proactive controls are based on measuring the imminence of congestion by the probability distribution for the first passage time to overload evaluated at the network round trip time. We derive an expression relating the probability distribution for the first passage to overload with the number of admitted sources, and their in-call burst level characteristics. Derivations are predicated on Markovian models for the input real time traffic. In turn, this expression is used towards the development of proactive congestion control algorithms
